A Parent's Guide to Young Officials
Your child signed up to officiate — here's what their first season looks like and how we help new young refs find their footing.
On-ice mentorship
- Depending on age, hockey experience, and maturity, new young officials are paired with a veteran official who skates alongside them during games, giving real-time coaching and feedback.
- As your child grows into the role, they move from being shadowed to working the game alongside the mentor — and eventually on their own.
What they'll work
- Young officials generally work the level below their own. For example, a 12U player officiates up to 10U.
Sibling games
- An official never works a sibling's game. If your child has a sibling playing, please let us know so we can avoid the conflict.
Getting paid
- Pay runs monthly, and we collect a W-9 through Track1099. We're glad to walk a parent through this part — just ask.
The rest of the guide applies to your child too — how to get certified, use Horizon, and get games. Questions? Reach out.
